Biography
  • Robert P. Wilder, MD, is an associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Virginia. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton, where he ran cross-country for the Flyers, serving as team captain in 1983. He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia. Following a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, he completed a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at the Nirschl Orthopaedic Sportsmedicine Clinic and the Virginia Sportsmedicine Institute. He practiced in Dallas from 1993-1998, during which time he served as medical director of the Runner’s Clinic at the Tom Landry Sportsmedicine and Research Center and as head team physician for the Dallas Burn of Major League Soccer. Since 1998, he has been on faculty at the University of Virginia, where he serves as medical director of the Runner’s Clinic at UVa and as a team physician for University of Virginia Athletics. He lives in Charlottesville with his wife, Susan, and their four children, Lauren, Stephen, Ryan, and Caroline.

  • Francis G. O’Connor, MD, MPH, associate professor at the Uniformed Services University and medical director for the Consortium on Health and Military Performance, has been a leader in sports medicine education and research for the military for over 15 years. Dr. O’Connor has authored over 30 articles in scientific journals and numerous book chapters/technical reports/health promotion resources for the military. In addition, Dr. O’Connor is the editor of four texts on sports medicine, including the Textbook of Running Medicine and Sports Medicine for the Primary Care Physician, 3rd Edition. He is on the board of several leading organizations in sports medicine, including the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, and the American Medical Athletic Association. A colonel in the United States Army, Dr. O’Connor is a 1981 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Prior to his recent posting at Uniformed Services University in the Department of Military Medicine, he served one year as a command surgeon with Special Operations in the Middle East.

  • Barry P. Boden, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery. He participated on the varsity soccer and track and field teams at Haverford College and then completed medical school and both his general surgery internship and an orthopaedic residency at Temple University in Philadelphia. Dr. Boden continued his training with a fellowship in sports medicine at Duke University, where he served as the assistant team physician for the varsity athletes. Since returning to the Washington, DC area, Dr. Boden has been active in advancing the study of sports medicine. He enjoys teaching and has lectured at local hospitals, national conferences, and as an instructor for the Orthopaedic Academy. He is a consultant at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and an adjunct associate professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). He is currently involved in several multi-center funded studies, including one evaluating head injuries in athletes and another studying the etiology of ACL injuries.
