Biography
- Barry A. Garst, Ph.D., is the director of program development and research application with the American Camp Association and an adjunct assistant professor in the department of agricultural and extension education at Virginia Tech. A native of Southeast Virginia, Barry grew up attending camp from the time he was eight until he was 21, serving in every camp role, including camper, CIT, teen counselor, summer camp staff member, and volunteer adult leader. His professional career began in mental health services in North Carolina, where he worked as a counselor in wilderness, school, home, and clinical settings. He joined Virginia Cooperative Extension at Virginia Tech as a faculty member in 1998, first as the director of programming of a large residential 4-H camp and conference center and later as assistant professor and extension specialist of 4-H youth development in the areas of staff development, youth camping, and administrator for Virginia’s 4-H educational conference centers. As part of that administrative position, Barry worked extensively with volunteer and staff development, and was involved with volunteers on a wide variety of committees, task forces, state initiatives, and agency and non-profit boards.
